GDS 214 WEB DESIGN II
Making Your Flash files Smaller
Instructor: Rob Higgins

Smaller Flash Files

Now that we have now created our masterpiece in Flash, often we notice that the files size is larger than we expected and the load time is lengthily especially on dial up connections.

There are others among us, myself included, that have very fast cable or other network connections, thus we are not even aware of the waiting time that our flash files take to download over a slow connection.

Either way, it's time to take a look at what we can do to make sure that our files have little or no download time. What can we do to make our files load instantly?

The Real World

Luckily for us Flashers, more and more Internet users are getting high speed Internet connections daily. The more of us that get high bandwidth connections, the easier it will be to use bigger and bigger Flash files but until that day comes...

Smaller is usually Better

If you want a magic bullet, you probably won't find one but there are a few software companies that offer vector animation optimization programs.

Ideaworks3d from London UK is offering a program called Optimaze! that claims to be able to reduce Flash 3, 4, 5, and MX files as well as Swift 3d and Swish by 50%. The Site is at: http://www.vecta3d.com Currently it cost $129.00 US. Although I didn't see a free trial version, the online demo was pretty impressive.

Sparkle Media Systems has a product called SWF Optimizer 1.0 (that claims to reduce Flash files up to 70% without any loss of quality. They have a free trial at http://www.flashkeeper.com/swfoptimizer.exe You can purchase it online if you like for US$24.95.

Eltima Software claims that their Flash Optimiozer 1.17 reduces swf files up to 60-70% without quality loss. They offer a free download of a 10 day trial version. They offer a personal license for US$99.00. Business licenses cost US$299.00 and $499.00. A lite version is also available at Eltima's sister company SoftInfinity.com for US39.95 Personal and US$139.95 for business.

SwishSoft says that it's Swift Optimizer Basic for US $19. 00 or it's Swift Optimizer V2.0 for US$29.95 for business reduces file size from 10 to 70% without an obvious reduction in quality. They offer a free shareware version.

Flexdev.com offers Asset Mover 1.2 claims to reduce file size and to eliminate the "stalled" effect in Flash Preloaders. There is a free demo for both Windows and Mac OS X. The cost is US$24.95.

VizUp 1.5 is easy-to-use software for reducing and optimizing 3D models. I am not sure how it integrates with files you import into Flash but it's freeware so you can't beat the price. Most likely this might help you reduce the files size in Swift 3D before you export to Flash.

Other Software

ActionScript.org has a section called Flashtoolset that features software for Flash.

HotScripts.com has a Flash Software Section and a tips and tutorials section.
